Firefox for Web Development?
Submitted by whiztech on Mon, 06/30/2008 - 22:38Installing lots of extensions on a single Firefox installation can turns Firefox into a bloated, heavy and memory hogging browser for web surfing. If you love to use Firefox in your web development and design, you should install the addons for web development to a separate Firefox installation, not the one that you use for daily web browsing.

First Look: AT&T Pogo Web Browser
Submitted by whiztech on Sun, 06/29/2008 - 16:57A few days ago I received the invitation to join the Project Pogo Limited Beta by the Pogo Development Team. AT&T Pogo is a Mozilla Firefox based web browser developed by AT&T and Vizible. The current version is based on Mozilla Firefox 2.0.0.14. Currently AT&T Pogo is in early limited beta stage. Fast Text File Encryption
Submitted by whiztech on Sat, 06/28/2008 - 01:43Steganos LockNote is a free and open source utility that offers you fast encryption for text files. Why encrypting text files is so important? Well.. if you are someone who like to store your passwords and other sensitive notes in a text file, of course you don’t want that particular file to be in the wrong hands.
Encrypting is the best solution to prevent unauthorized individual from accessing the data in the text file. Why Steganos LockNote is the best software to do this job? First of all, the software doesn’t requires any installation, which means it is portable. It is also small in size (312 KB for version 1.0.4).

Opera-like Mouse Gestures in Firefox
Submitted by whiztech on Wed, 06/25/2008 - 13:57
One of the features that I love in Opera is its mouse gestures. The gestures that I use most is right click + right/left which enables me to go Back and Forward a web page. Ever since I migrate to Flock (Firefox based web browser) I somehow miss those features.
FireGestures is a great Firefox add-on that allows you to have the Opera-like mouse gestures in Firefox. It works outside of the box without the need to change any settings. If you are someone that love to tweak a software to its full potential, here are the features of FireGestures:

VLC Alternative?
Submitted by whiztech on Wed, 06/25/2008 - 13:32VLC is one of the most popular media player. It is free, open source, and usually can play all the files that won’t play in other players. But, if you find VLC sometimes not very suitable for you, then you might look for other alternative media player.
I sometimes found that VLC cannot play x264 video very well on my slower Pentium 4 machine if the web browser that I use uses a lot of CPU and memory. The playback is not smooth and sometimes stuck.

Encoding Videos to MP4 for Mobile Phones
Submitted by whiztech on Wed, 06/18/2008 - 03:48Most of today's modern mobile phones have the ability to play MP4 video files. The hard part is to encode the video while maintaining the compatibility and optimising the video file for mobile phone playback. While video in 3GP container can be encoded using advanced codec (AVC/H.264 for example) and HE-AAC for audio, most of the 3GP files are encoded using H.263 for video and AMR-NB or AMR-WB for audio which is not very great compared with XViD and AAC in MP4.

Finding What Website Hosted on Your Site’s Server
Submitted by whiztech on Tue, 06/17/2008 - 05:21This is usually useful if you are on shared hosting. You can know if your website is hosted on a crowded server with hundreds of other sites, or if the server is hosting questionable websites. You can also explore the quality sites hosted on your site’s server. You will get the rough view and I don't think the data is 100% accurate. Pretty interesting to check out.
myIPneighbors is a free service that will let you find who and how many websites are hosted on your site’s server.

Test Drive Flock 2.0 Beta
Submitted by whiztech on Tue, 06/17/2008 - 00:50While Firefox 3 will arive soon tomorrow, 17th June 2008, Flock 2.0 beta 1 is also available for test drive. Flock 2.0 will be based on Firefox 3 technology. Flock is a web browser that specializes in providing social networking and other Web 2.0 features built into its interface. The browser is built on Mozilla’s Firefox codebase.
However, I experienced random crashes with Flock 2.0 beta, especially when organizing or dealing with Favorites (Windows XP SP3). I also lost my bookmark during the update. So, better backup your configuration first if you are planning to test Flock 2.0 beta. It is still in beta stage. Just a small cosmetic change in Flock 2.0 beta.
Flock 2.0 beta is available for Windows, Mac and Linux.

Web Browser Memory Usage: Firefox vs Flock vs Internet Explorer vs Opera
Submitted by whiztech on Tue, 06/10/2008 - 04:11I am actually a heavy tab user, usually every time I am browsing the Internet, I opened average 10 tabs and maybe more. My desktop PC is running on 2.66Ghz Pentium 4 which is quite slow for a heavy tab user like me. I’ve tested a lot of browsers that doesn’t require a lot of resources even when opening lots of tabs.
