Sometimes some of us will be in a situation where we rarely can access the Internet. In this post, I will gather the way on how to keep antivirus on a system without Internet connection up to date with the latest virus signature.

1. Kaspersky Antivirus/Internet Security

Click here to download the antivirus database. There are up to 3 files that you need to download, depends on when the last time you perform an update. You can read the description of each files on the download page. I recommend you download all 3 files so you won’t miss any updates (av-i386-cumul.zip, av-i386-weekly.zip and av-i386-daily.zip for Kaspersky Antivirus, or av-i386&ids-cumul.zip, av-i386&ids-weekly.zip and av-i386&ids-daily.zip for Kaspersky Internet Security).

Extract all the files into a folder, E:\Kaspersky Updates for example. Extract av-i386-cumul.zip first, followed by av-i386-weekly.zip and lastly av-i386-daily.zip into that folder. Overwrite all files if prompt to.

Open Kaspersky settings. Navigates to Update, and click Settings (1).

Click Add (2) to add the folder where you previously extracted the update files (E:\Kaspersky Updates for example). Untick Kaspersky Lab’s update servers (3), and then tick to select the folder that you add as the update source (4). Save the configuration. Right click the Kapsersky tray icon, then click update to perform manual update of the antivirus database.

Notes: For me, Kaspersky is the best antivirus so far. Very cheap, only RM65 for 1 year license for 1 user. Very lightweight, the interface is very user friendly, and one of the best in virus detection rate.

2. Avira Antivir Personal

Click here and download Antivir incremental VDF update (ivdf_fusebundle_nt_en.zip). Open Antivir main window, navigates to Update > Manual Update. Browse for ivdf_fusebundle_nt_en.zip.

3. AVG Free 8

Click here to go to the download page. You can read the description of the manual updates files. The last date of when the files were last updated are also shown. To save time, download only the files that has been updated since your last download. If this is your first download, just download them all. Put all the files that you downloaded in a folder (C:\AVG Updates for example).

Open AVG main window, go to Tools > Update from directory. Browse for the folder where you put all the updates files (C:\AVG Updates for example). Click OK to perform the update.

4. avast! 4 Home Edition

Updating avast! 4 Home Edition is very easy. Go to this page to download Update avast! 4.x VPS. Just run the downloaded Update avast! 4.x VPS (vpsupd.exe) on the system where avast! 4 Home Edition is installed to get avast! virus signature updated.

very useful article

This is really useful, many times you are right we dont have net connection and following these steps will be of great help!

Kaspersky User

By the time I threw up my hands in disgust over Norton, I could have bought stock and been rich LOL! Switched to Kaspersky and am very happy with it. Good writeup!

@lvs: Not all antivirus

@lvs: Not all antivirus offers the manual update function. Choosing antivirus software wisely is a must if you have or don't have internet connection, especially if you are working with lots of shared media.

@Diane Scott: So far, I found Kaspersky is lightweight, and has very good detection rate. I highly recommend it!

Unfortunately, the problem

Unfortunately, the problem with updating antivirus software does exist. It looks like manufacturers simply don't know about users without Internet access. For example, F-prot 3.16 used to have a very convenient manual update option (called LAN Update), which is no longer found in F-prot 6. So for owners of PC's without Internet connection it is not easy to find antivirus program with manual update function. I think McAfee is not manually updatable, too.
