File-copying Utility Test: TeraCopy vs FastCopy
I’ve been using TeraCopy as my default copy handler for a few month to speed up the file copying/moving process. Sometimes, I wonder if TeraCopy is actually helps in speed up the file copying process or not. So, I decided to perform a simple test to compare the copying speed of built in copy handler in Windows, TeraCopy and FastCopy.
TeraCopy
Developer description: TeraCopy is a compact program designed to copy and move files at the maximum possible speed, providing the user a lot of features.
TeraCopy is a freeware and it can integrates to Windows as a default copy handler.
FastCopy
Developer description: FastCopy is the Fastest Copy/Delete Software on Windows. It can copy/delete unicode and over MAX_PATH(260byte) pathname files.
In this test, I use TeraCopy 2.0 beta 4a and FastCopy 1.90.
Test 1: Copying small files
In this test, I will copy a folder weight about 544MB, contains 121 files and 19 folders inside it. The file size ranging from 19KB and 10.9MB. The files will be copied from an IDE hard drive to another IDE hard drive.
Results (average value):
Default Windows copy handler: 25 seconds
TeraCopy: 148 seconds
FastCopy: 19 seconds

Test 2: Copying large files
This test is the same as Test 1, except the data is a 676MB folder with 13 files and 2 folders. The file size are from 10.8MB to 270MB
Results (average value):
Default Windows copy handler: 33 seconds
TeraCopy: 29 seconds
FastCopy: 22 seconds
From the test, it seems that TeraCopy is not suitable to copy lots of small files. At least it don’t really work on my system when copying lots of small files. FastCopy however helps to reduce the time required to copy files.
