| 8 July 2008 | Posted by whiztech under Uncategorized |
At FreeDNS, you can choose from 43,811 (as this post was written) domains and create a subdomain. FreeDNS is actually a free DNS, dynamic DNS, static DNS, subdomain and domain hosting. FreeDNS also offers URL redirection service. For example, you can redirect http://yourblogname.blogspot.com from some more unique URL.
To create a URL redirection service with FreeDNS, first you need to be registered on the site. Registration is free. Next, browse the registry, and choose the domain that you want. You can search the database to look for domain with a specific keyword. Click on the domain name (lol.my for example) (1), and on the next screen, choose a name of the subdomain (2) that you want to use for your URL. For example, entering tmsnetwork and your URL will be http://tmsnetwork.lol.my. Just leave other options to default value. Save the subdomain to add your URL to the database.
Next, click the URL that you choose earlier to edit it (3), and then click ‘Forward to a URL‘ (4).
In ‘Redirect to’ field, enter the target URL that you want the new URL to be forwarded to. You can tick ‘Cloak’ if you want the target URL to be cloaked using the new URL.
Explanation of ‘Force Dir Root’:
For example, with a Web Forward setup like this:
http://site1.afraid.org maps to:
http://somesite.byyourisp.com/~yourusername/
With directory root,
http://site1.afraid.org/anything/anything.html would map to:
http://somesite.byyourisp.com/~yourusername/
Without directory root:
http://site1.afraid.org/anything/anything.html would map to:
http://somesite.byyourisp.com/~yourusername/anything/anything.html
Notes: You will get instant activation if you choose a domain that marked as ‘Public’. Using a ‘Private’ domain are upon the domain’s owner approval.
